Your Questions Answered-PLUMS

Layne L. e-mailed us asking what to do with plums.  In our house, they don't last long enough to wonder. So, I'm asking for everyone's help. What do you do with your plums besides eat them raw? We'd love to hear your suggestions. By the way, her husband doesn't like plum sauce on pork and that's her only idea so far. (But, I think it sounds good. Anyone have a recipe?!)

Here is a recipe for Plum Crumble. Do you think your husband would go for that, Layne? I think it sounds so yummy. Probably both sweet and tart all at the same time. Mmmmm!

A plum crumble recipe, or plum crisp, made with fresh plums and a crunchy topping.

Ingredients:

  • 3 pounds fresh plums, pitted, quartered, about 5 cups
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

Preparation:

Combine plums and brown sugar, stirring well to blend. Pour into a buttered 11 1/2x7 1/2 inch baking dish. Sift together the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add the beaten egg, stirring lightly with fork until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle mixture evenly over the plums then drizzle with the melted butter. Bake plum crumble at 375° for 40 to 45 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve warm with whipped topping or ice cream.

Okay I made a plum dump cake...so easy and soooooo good.
Cut up a bunch of plums to fill bottom of a casserole/cake pan (you can throw peaches in there too if needed/wanted)
dump one yellow cake mix on top
Cut one cube of butter into little pieces and lay on top.
Spinkle one cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts on top.
Bake at 350 for 50 minutes...so yummy! Sweet, tart and rich. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Plum jam. Around here it's a favorite of all. I made a peach/blueberry/plum jam with lemon zest this summer also. Plum seems to go well with other fruits. They are also great in a fruit salad. Kind of a surprise when mixed with other stuff. Plus just eating straight is always great.
